Look who’s knocking on our door: it’s Sinterklaas! And this year he spoils our colleagues’ children as well as kids in Amsterdam whose families are experiencing less fortunate financial times.
Sinterklaas: a Dutch tradition
Sinterklaas and the festivities around this remarkable person are a typical Dutch tradition. Every year Sinterklaas arrives in The Netherlands somewhere mid-November. He comes on a steam boat together with his helpers (Pieten) and many, many gifts. He spends a bit of time here handing those gifts out, with the highlight being December 5th.
In the weeks leading up to that day, children can already put their shoe next to the chimney or near the door so that Sinterklaas can come over at night and put a present in it. But on December 5th Sinterklaas goes all out and delivers presents to all kids in the country. You’ll see many parents rushing home early to get ready for an evening of singing Sinterklaas songs and unwrapping gifts while eating way too much sugar. Sinterklaas definitely loves his sweets. There’s marzipan, chocolate letters, gingerbread men and of course pepernoten.
Sinterklaas at Emakina
We are very lucky to have Sinterklaas come visit the Emakina office too. Our colleagues bring their mini-me’s to the office for the Sinterklaas celebrations. The kids take over the building! It’s a fun filled morning with lots of Sinterklaas candy and singing songs. The kids love it, and so do the adults. It’s awesome to see the proud faces of the parents and it’s a great chance to get to know the families of our colleagues a little bit.
Sinterklaas also had a serious talk with some of the parents, who may, or may not have misbehaved recently…
Toys for the toy bank
Leading up to Sinterklaas’ visit to our office, we collected new and second hand toys for children with a challenging financial background. All the toys go to Speelgoedbank Amsterdam (a toy bank), a charity that makes sure the toys end up with their new owners.
Would you like to join next year’s Sinterklaas festivities? Then it’s time to apply to one of our vacancies.
